Dr. Jobaer Alam joined Dhaka University as a Lecturer in 2009 in the Department of Fisheries. In 2013 he became an Assistant Professor and joined the Department of Oceanography in Dhaka University. He served as the Chairman of the Department of Oceanography for two consecutive terms from April 2018.

Dr. Jobaer Alam assumed the role of Chairman and Acting Editor of The Bangladesh Today, a national English daily in 2013. The Bangladesh Today founded in 2002 re-emerged under his administration as a modern newspaper for the new generation with vast online presence and has been acting as a platform to promote culture, education and dialogue in the young generation.

Dr. Jobaer Alam has other involvements through various organizations he founded in the real estate, media, consultancy and international business sector. He is the Co-ordinator and Treasurer of the World's Largest Sculptor Village named as Barbarism of 1971.
